Brine is worse than rock salt, and Maryland uses brine
Maryland's State Highway Administration pre-treats roads with liquid salt brine before storms rather than only spreading rock salt afterwards.
Brine works better on ice, which is why they use it. It is also worse for your vehicle. Rock salt bounces off a moving car and largely ends up on the road. Brine is sprayed as a liquid, it coats, and it clings — into wheel wells, along seams, up into the undercarriage and into every panel gap.
It also stays active at lower temperatures and reactivates every time the car gets damp. A car treated with brine in December is still carrying corrosive salt in February unless it has been properly rinsed.
What it actually damages
The undercarriage first. Brake and fuel lines, subframes, exhaust hangers and suspension components. This is where salt does expensive damage, and it is the part nobody looks at.
Seams and panel edges. Door bottoms, wheel arch lips and the tailgate seam. Salt sits in these, holds moisture, and corrosion starts from the inside of the seam outward — which is why it appears as bubbling paint seemingly out of nowhere.
Clear coat, more slowly. Salt itself etches slowly, but salt plus road grit plus a dry wipe is how most winter swirl marks happen. The damage is usually mechanical, not chemical.

The winter routine that actually prevents it
Rinse the undercarriage after any salted drive. A hose is enough. You are diluting brine, not scrubbing. This is the single highest-value winter habit and most people never do it.
Wash every two to three weeks, not monthly. Winter is the one season to wash more often, which is the opposite of what most people do.
Never wipe a dry, dirty car. Salt and grit act like sandpaper. If you are going to touch the paint, rinse it first.
Get protection on before the first brine truck. Late October or November. A six-month ceramic applied then is still working in March.
Why washing in freezing weather is not the problem people think
The common worry is that washing in cold weather causes damage. It does not, with two caveats.
Do not wash when the temperature is below freezing and the car will sit outside afterwards — water in door seals and locks can freeze. Wash on a milder day, or somewhere the car can dry.
And dry properly, especially door jambs and around the fuel door. Trapped water freezing in a seam is worse than the salt you just removed.
